Our Net Zero Journey

Our Net Zero Journey

We take our role seriously in driving meaningful climate action as part of the transition to a low carbon economy, having defined science-based targets and recognising wider Net Zero ambitions for 2050.

We have made a number of public commitments which include GHG emission reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets Initiatives (SBTi). We have set our targets in line with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5oC.

Driving Progress on Climate

We have a Net Zero Working Group to help drive the key initiatives and projects which are focused on reducing our overall Green-House Gas (GHG) emission reductions. Main areas of focus include the adoption of renewable energy sources for our offices, the reduction and transition of car fleet with electric vehicles, business travel and the engagement of suppliers and landlords.

For more information please see Our Carbon Reduction Plan

We have a Climate Committee to systematically appraise climate-related risks and opportunities and to act as a conduit into risk management, business planning, the Executive Leadership Team and the ESG Committee.

For more information on our climate-related governance structure and our climate-related risks and opportunities please see our TCFD Report.

GHG Emissions Reporting

We report and provide commentary on our GHG Emissions in our ESG Report.

We have committed to:

  • 50% reduction in scope 1 & 2 emissions by 2026 versus 2020 baseline, as approved by the SBTi (1.5°C trajectory)
  • 50% reduction in scope 3 emissions from purchased goods, services & capital goods by 2030 versus 2020 baseline, as approved by the SBTi (1.5°C trajectory)
  • 40% reduction in absolute scope 3 emissions from buisness travel by 2026 against a 2020 baseline, as approved by the SBTi (1.5°C trajectory)
  • transition to 100% renewable energy where there is a viable market solution for electricity supply
  • invest in beyond-value chain mitigation projects in relation to emissions that equate to our scope 1 & 2, scope 3 buisness travel and scope 3 transition and distribution losses, until at least 2026

We are proud to be adopting a best practice approach to climate and to have achieved external certification with leading experts ClimatePartner.

The ClimatePartner certification provides transparent disclosure of a company's entire climate strategy, including carbon footprints, emission reduction targets, implemented reductions and financial contribution towards climate projects worldwide.

Beyond value-chain mitigation

The certified carbon project in which we have invested is an afforestation project in eastern Uruguay. This Guanare Afforestation project covers 22,000 hectares of previously degraded farming which is being regenerated into forest. The project seeks to store around seven million tonnes of COover its lifetime, with annual carbon absorption of nearly 130,000 tonnes. The project has been independently assessed, and supports five United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with around 10,000 local people benefitting from the afforestation efforts.

“Climate change presents a huge challenge to the world, and we all need to act.

I’m proud of the commitment and collaboration I have seen across Hays, with material changes in our behaviours which will help deliver our carbon emissions reduction targets.”

Dirk Hahn, Group Chief Executive
