One in two candidates in Japan are not satisfied with their salary, according to recruitment experts Hays. In the 2017 Hays Asia Salary Guide, released last month, the number of respondents who said they are looking for a new employer due to salary or benefit package increased by 12% from last year. Additionally, when asked about their total compensation package provided by their current employer, 53% indicated that they are not satisfied, revealing the increasing dissatisfaction among workers around wages in Japan.

“Following on the trend from last year, in general, salaries for roles up to a certain level are comparatively higher in Japan,” says Marc Burrage, Managing Director for Hays in Japan. “But in roles demanding experience and skills, including executive roles, we begin to see the salary range become much higher – in some cases, more than 50% – in China, Hong Kong and Singapore.”

“Adjusting salary levels in line with global standards will be key for employers to hire and retain good talent. At the same time, we recommend that candidates not only keep track of where their current salary levels stand within the market, but also the potential levels that they may be capable of earning by upskilling.”
