A charity auction, hosted by Hays in Bristol, for Gareth Bale’s shirt for the Wales v Belgium Euro 2016 game raised £1,300 for children’s hospices across the UK including Jessie May Trust, Children’s Hospice South West and Ty Hafan.
The auction was held as part of Hays’ charity partnership with Together for Short Lives, the UK charity that speaks out for children and young people who are expected to have short lives.
The auction at Manheim Auctions in Bristol attracted a high volume of bidders including several telephone bids from Welsh football fans who wanted their own piece of football history. The successful bidder was Longburton Cars in Dorset, now proud owner of the shirt signed by Gareth Bale and their own piece of Welsh sporting history.
Carrie Owen, Director at Hays in Bristol, organised the auction and comments: “I am proud that our charity auction raised £1,300 for Together for Short Lives and will support children’s hospices across the UK including our local hospice, Jessie May Trust, in Bristol. Our aim at Hays is to fund 12,500 hours of care by raising £250,000 as part of our two year charity partnership and I am thrilled to play a part towards achieving this target. Thank you to everyone who placed a bid on the evening and particular thanks to Gareth Bale and the Football Association of Wales who kindly donated the match spare shirt.”
Nick Appleby, Corporate Fundraising Manager at Together for Short Lives said: “We are delighted with the commitment that the team from Hays in Bristol has already shown to the charity. Their support will help us raise much-needed funds for thousands of seriously ill children and their families who rely on the vital care provided by local children’s hospice services across the country."

Together for Short Lives
Hearing the news that your child has a life-shortening condition and is likely to die young is completely devastating. For tens of thousands of families in the UK this is the reality. These children have very complex and unpredictable conditions and often need round the clock care, seven days a week.
Together for Short Lives is a UK wide charity that, together with our members, speaks out for all children and young people who are expected to have short lives. We are here to help children and their families to access specialist children’s palliative care services when and where they need it. We provide information so families know where to go for support and have the help they need to make the right choices about their child’s care. Together for Short Lives supports all the professionals, children’s palliative care services and children’s hospices that deliver lifeline care to children and families across the UK.
Together with everyone who provides care and support to these children and families, we are here to help them have as fulfilling lives as possible and the very best care at the end of life. We can’t change the diagnosis, but we can help children and families make the most of their time together.
