Early childhood teachers, residential property salespeople and IT security professionals are three skills in demand in Australia’s transitioning economy, says recruiting experts Hays.
The recruiter’s latest Hays Quarterly Report suggests the job market is steady as our economy transitions from mining to non-mining sectors.
“Strong activity in the IT, residential construction and services sectors has helped the employment market show relative resilience within the context of a prevailing low growth economic environment,” says Nick Deligiannis, Managing Director of Hays in Australia & New Zealand. “These sectors have fuelled vacancy activity, especially in the Eastern states, to counter-balance job losses in the mining and mining-related sectors.
“Residential construction is one key driver of vacancy activity at present, while Australia’s information technology (IT) sector is active too. With the technology industries at the heart of Malcolm Turnbull’s economic agenda, and a spike in the number of organisations of all types leveraging technology to create or manage transformational change or to perform tasks in new ways, suitable skills are in high demand. There really is no sector or department not exposed to technological change.
“Of course the services sector is set to be the next driver of our economy and we are already seeing strong vacancy activity in education and healthcare in particular,” he said.
According to the latest Hays Quarterly Report, the skills in greatest demand include:
- Information Technology: Security professionals, Certified Information Systems Security Professionals and Certified Information Security Managers are needed, while the growth of cloud based technologies has created a need for cloud specialists with SaaS and IaaS experience and candidates with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and vendor or supplier management skills. There is a huge supply gap for Dynamics CRM Developers, .Net Developers, Agile Project Managers and Agile Business Analysts. DevOps, P2V (physical to virtual) and mobile development experience is highly valued too. We are also seeing an increase in demand for business intelligence and analytics candidates as well as Data Architects.
- Construction: Demand varies by location. In Sydney the recruitment market has never been so candidate short with Site Managers, Forepersons, Project Managers and Site Administrators in demand. In ACT high-rise and mixed-use residential developments are creating demand for Project Managers and Contract Administrators, while in Queensland a strong residential market means that General Residential Forepersons, Contracts Administrators, Site Managers, Commercial Project Managers and Finishes Forepersons are all required. In Western Australia and South Australia Estimators are in greatest demand to help builders become more competitive and win work.
- Property: The property market is very short of experienced candidates and very rich in candidates without specific experience in property. Suitably skilled and experienced candidates in demand include experienced Residential Salespeople, Commercial Salespeople, Residential Property Managers, Qualified Valuers and Strata Managers. In Queensland, NSW and Adelaide Off-Plan Residential Salespeople are also sought, while Commercial Property Managers are needed in Queensland, NSW and ACT.
- Education: In the early years sector the demand for Diploma and ECT qualified Educators, both permanent and temporary, is unfaltering. Childcare workers with their certificate 3 or diploma are in demand too to fill temporary sick leave positions. Secondary schools require Teachers on a temporary and contract basis, particularly in mathematics and science, while the vocational market needs Trainers and Assessors. Educational leadership professionals are sought across all educational sectors, while Student Engagement Managers are needed as competition between providers intensifies.
- Healthcare: Skills in demand include mental health practitioners, Aboriginal identified healthcare workers, Allied health practitioners with interdisciplinary experience, degree-qualified Social Workers, General Practitioners, experienced Endorsed Enrolled Nurses, Registered Nurses and Clinical Nurses.
