Driving climate action, Australia

Across our worldwide operations, Australia is a real focal point for climate action. This is based on the significant contribution they make to our total carbon footprint and how climate is impacting the country. Australia is vulnerable to climate change — evident with the bushfires in Victoria and floods in Queensland, impacting both people and wildlife. In this context, a multi-faceted approach to climate action is being driven locally.

Energy and emissions: Where possible we source electricity from ‘Powershop’, a carbon-neutral energy supplier, to reduce electricity-related emissions. While Australia’s shared grid limits direct renewable sourcing, this partnership ensures emissions are offset through tree planting. In terms of company cars, we have introduced vehicle emission thresholds and mandated hybrid vehicles for managers, acknowledging the country’s limited EV infrastructure.

Travel and waste: We have significantly reduced business travel by leveraging Microsoft Teams for collaboration. However, large-scale events like the Global Leadership Summit still pose challenges. All offices are equipped with recycling facilities, though waste data remains challenging to obtain.

Tree Planting Initiative: In FY24, a standout initiative was launched — planting one tree for every ten successful placements. This resulted in 1,064 trees planted in just a few months. Encouraged by positive feedback, the company pledged to plant 5,000 trees in FY25. Partnering with Carbon Neutral, trees are planted in the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor, supporting both carbon credits and biodiversity restoration. The initiative also promotes local employment and First Nations engagement. To date, over 6,000 trees have been planted, marking a year of sustained environmental commitment. This initiative reflects our broader sustainability goals and our role as a responsible, forward-thinking organisation.
