Jobseeker applications up 55% this new year

07 January 2019

UK

The start of the New Year often brings with it an influx of new registrations and applications from jobseekers, but this year recruiter Hays has seen a spike in applications on the first working day of the year. On 2 January – the first working day of 2019 for many – Hays saw applications via hays.co.uk increase by 55%*.

Simon Winfield, Managing Director of Hays UK & Ireland, says: “People often use the Christmas break to reflect on what they want from their career so we usually see an increase in applications, but this year the spike is staggering. People want more from their careers and they aren’t prepared to stay in jobs that don’t offer career progression or with bosses who aren’t listening to their needs. The rising train fares coupled with delays and cancellations on the first day back will have only cemented people’s resolutions to look for a new job.”

This data from follows a survey of over 23,000 people in 2018, which showed that over half of the workforce (56%) plan to look for a new role and over three-quarters (76%) of employers are planning to hire. The Hays Salary & Recruiting Trends 2019 guide offered a strong indication that jobseekers would look for new roles, which has been supported by the latest data from the recruiter.
