Salary levels are known to be typically higher in companies located in metropolitan Tokyo, but the recently published 2017 Hays Asia Salary Guide West Japan Trends found that salaries for some roles in the pharmaceutical sector may sometimes exceed levels in Tokyo, says recruiting experts Hays.

The 2017 Hays Asia Salary Guide, released earlier this month, highlights salary and recruiting trends drawn from key companies across Japan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore as well as the salary ranges from more than 1,200 roles. The Guide reveals that salary increases in Japan continue to lag behind in Asia, and continuing on from last year’s trend, it also reveals that for roles demanding experience and skills, salary ranges are much higher in China, Hong Kong and Singapore.
The West Japan Trends, released yesterday, supplements the Guide, providing insights and key trends outside of the Tokyo region for 8 different sectors (Accountancy & Finance, HR, IT, Manufacturing & Operations, Office Professionals, Supply Chain and Sales & Marketing).
‘Employers in Kansai are experiencing growing demand for work-ready bilingual talent, and competition over such candidates is becoming intense due to the extreme shortness of supply,’ says Marc Burrage, Managing Director of Hays in Japan. ‘Competitive salaries are offered for most positions in Kansai that require high skills and experience, but we are seeing a rise in the salary levels in some roles, primarily in Life Sciences, exceeding the levels of Tokyo.
‘Companies in Kansai have always competed against their metropolitan rivals, but raising the salary bar and offering an even more competitive range will help employers attract talent not only from within Japan, but from the global talent pool.
‘It is important to view salary for high skilled employees as an investment, not a cost. The world is changing rapidly, so acting swiftly according to market trends will ensure companies are able to keep up with the race for talent - domestically and globally,’ says Marc.
