Many Malaysian companies are focusing on developing mobile apps for both Android and IOS over desktop applications creating high demand for developers with the relevant skills, according to recruitment experts Hays.
The latest Hays Quarterly Report for Malaysia predicts skilled developers will have a supply of quality roles to choose from in the January to March quarter.
“The market for apps in Malaysia has developed incredibly quickly over the last two years and we are seeing some outstanding young talent developing innovative apps from within start ups as well as large companies and even solo projects to support causes,” says Tom Osborne, Regional Director of Hays in Malaysia.
“It’s a very exciting time to be an app developer and we expect the strong demand for talent to continue beyond the January to March quarter,” says Tom.
Also in hot demand are candidates experienced working with open-source programming and frameworks. Companies are looking to open-source software as a way of saving costs but also to make updates and amendments with relative ease.
Agile and scrum professionals remain in growing demand this quarter too as an increasing number of IT and digital firms in Malaysia adopt these methodologies as part of their standard business processes.
“Agile is not just an increasingly popular methodology being embraced in Malaysia, it’s a mindset too and we are pleased to see that so many of the candidates we work with are keen to learn new skills and take on greater challenges,” says Tom.
“Whether it’s switching roles from development to analytics or from business intelligence to learning how to develop mobile apps, the dynamic technology sector in Malaysia needs candidates willing to up skill and refocus their career wherever the skill demand is greatest.
“Saying that, it’s important for candidates to note that companies hiring this quarter are looking for those able to hit the ground running because they have the skills and experience to do the job competently without training or extensive onboarding.”
“Staying current and looking for ways to expand skillsets is something candidates must take on themselves. In our experience companies view this sort of proactive approach to professional development as dedication to the technology industry,” says Tom.
