Mobile developers are the rock stars of the hot Information Technology talent market in Japan

Mobile developers are in white-hot demand this quarter as the use of mobile in Japan by both individuals and businesses continues to grow rapidly, says recruiting experts Hays in Japan.

The latest Hays Quarterly Report for April to June also reveals demand for contract and temporary staff is also on the rise as well as specialist talent in the areas of big data and cyber security.

“The huge spike in demand for mobile developers can be attributed to the rising number of domestic companies in this space,” says Marc Burrage, Managing Director of Hays in Japan.

“Mobile is being used as a marketing channel, a media and retail platform, a personal device, a way to access apps and games and much more. The number of uses for mobile will only continue to rise in Japan,” says Marc.

Earlier this year, Japan saw a relaxation of restrictions on mobile virtual network operators and this too will only further drive up demand for products and services and ultimately talent.

“We are seeing a sharp increase in non-gaming apps using mobile platforms including newspapers and magazines, lifestyle and shopping and travel – the range is really very wide,” Marc says.

Meanwhile, outsourcing particular IT functions is becoming more commonplace amongst large companies in Japan. As a result we are seeing third party suppliers competing to hire skilled IT professionals on a temporary and contract basis.

Due to the scope of work, Japanese candidates are preferred but there has been a number of expat IT professionals being recruited from overseas.

“Not surprisingly, demand for skilled bilingual IT candidates continues to exceed supply in Japan with a permanent role taking up to three months to fill and a contract/temporary role up to two months,” says Marc.

Other areas which show strong recruitment activity this quarter include big data as vendors are increasing in number and extending the range of products and services on offer in Japan. Cyber security also remains a very hot area of hiring activity and shows no signs of slowing.
