- Most employers (63 percent) in Japan plan salary increases up to three per cent this year
- In many cases, salary levels of high-skilled professionals in China, Hong Kong and Singapore exceed those in Japan
- For certain roles in Life Sciences and Manufacturing & Operations, salary ranges are slightly higher in Kansai when compared to the same positions in the Kanto region
The 2016 Hays Osaka Salary Guide, released on 10th March, as a supplement to the Hays Asia Salary Guide, provides insights on employment trends for Accountancy & Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Life Sciences, Manufacturing & Operations, Office Professionals, Sales & Marketing and Supply Chain, covering more than 500 roles in the Kansai region.
The Guide found that for some positions, west Japan’s employers are ready to offer a higher salary range compared to the same positions in the Kanto region.

The higher salary range in west Japan may due in part be from the market differences. Though conditions of the manufacturing sector in west Japan is tough, many businesses perform fairly well as a result of striving to be technologically competitive in the global market. In the pharmaceutical industry, bilingual, senior level candidates are scarce that is leading to a high competition between employers as they battle to secure qualified talent.
Globalisation has been accelerating in West Japan over the years resulting in a fierce competition for bilingual professionals. In order to reduce the risk of talent outflow and losing the current workforce to other regions, Hays recommends that employers continue to review the wage standards for their workforce to align them with the market and reinforce their candidate attraction and retention plans.
