23 March 2016

On Saturday 12 March, staff from Hays in Leicester raised over £7,000 for children’s hospices across the UK, including Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People in Loughborough by trekking Snowdon Mountain in Wales.

The fundraising challenge was held as part of the recruiter’s charity partnership with Together for Short Lives, the UK wide charity that speaks out for all children and young people who are expected to have short lives.

A team of 19 Hays staff trekked 12 miles across the highest mountain in Wales tackling sub-zero temperatures and three feet of snow.

Chetna Thanki, from Hays in Leicester who helped organise the trek, said: “I was very proud to organise this event for Together for Short Lives and support Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People. Personally I found the trek and the conditions very challenging, but the determination and the support of my colleagues was definitely a driving force.  It’s a great feeling and sense of achievement both reaching the summit and knowing that the money we’ve raised would help such a great cause. Conquering Snowdon as a team was brilliant! Our aim is to fund 6,000 hours of care in children’s hospices across the UK by raising £120,000 as part of our charity partnership and I am thrilled to play a part towards achieving this target.”

Nick Appleby, Corporate Fundraising Manager at Together for Short Lives said: “We are delighted with the commitment that the team from Hays have already shown to the charity. Their support will help us raise much-needed funds for thousands of seriously ill children and their families who rely on the vital care provided by local children’s hospice services across the country."

Together for Short Lives
Hearing the news that your child has a life-shortening condition and is likely to die young is completely devastating. For tens of thousands of families in the UK this is the reality. These children have very complex and unpredictable conditions and often need round the clock care, seven days a week.

Together for Short Lives is a UK wide charity that, together with our members, speaks out for all children and young people who are expected to have short lives.  We are here to help children and their families to access specialist children’s palliative care services when and where they need it. We provide information so families know where to go for support and have the help they need to make the right choices about their child’s care. Together for Short Lives supports all the professionals, children’s palliative care services and children’s hospices that deliver lifeline care to children and families across the UK.

Together with everyone who provides care and support to these children and families, we are here to help them have as fulfilling lives as possible and the very best care at the end of life. We can’t change the diagnosis, but we can help children and families make the most of their time together.
